Southside Cassius

This cocktail is inspired by Anthony Brutus Cassius, who opened the Dreamland Cafe in 1939 in south Minneapolis. According to Historyapolis, it was “A rare public space that welcomed people of all races at a time when the city was rigidly segregated, it laid the foundation for social change.”

He opened a private club, Nacirema, where local musicians such as Prince, The Time, and Alexander O’Neal performed.

Cassius later became the first Black man to obtain a liquor license in Minnesota, and he opened Cassius Bar in Minneapolis. He ensured his bar was an inclusive place for everyone. In an oral history interview, Cassus said, “one of my criteria was that you had to respect the person next to you.”

Cassius was someone who went the extra mile but stayed on the block. He was in business 47 years and lived in the same neighborhood. He created opportunities for others through job creation, sponsorship of sports teams, and political organizing.

Cheers to Anthony Brutus Cassius!
